Defining and understanding the influence of “animal” microbiome in health/disease and how to exploit it.
Main research topics
Animal and insect microbial ecology
Defining the inter-connections between microbiome and health or disease status in livestock, domestic/wildlife animals and insects. Study of the gut and skin microbiome, evaluating changes in microbial ecology in response to different diets, microbial pathogen and parasite infections or stress-related challenge. Research involves studies with controlled animal experiments and/or field experiments. Influence of the insect microbiome on their fitness and implications for the plant-insect interactions.
Exploiting the rumen fermentation to improve animal health and animal food products quality, as well as reducing the environmental impact.
